GO Train to Union
Ajax is the Durham community that gets chosen twice, once by people moving from Toronto, and once by people moving from Pickering who want to stay close but get more house. It is the closest Durham city to the GTA and it shows, the Lakeshore East GO Train from Ajax Station to Union is one of the most reliable commutes in the entire GTA corridor, and the result is a market that consistently sees strong demand year-round.
The Ajax waterfront is under-celebrated. The Ajax waterfront trail runs for kilometres along Lake Ontario with some of the best sunrise views in the GTA, the Rotary Park beach draws families every summer weekend, and the Paradise Park and Rotary pocket behind it holds some of the nicest homes in the city. Up north, the subdivisions north of Taunton hold the newer build stock that attracts families coming from Toronto looking for space, schools, and a driveway.
Ajax schools hold their own against any Durham city. Pickering High School's catchment, Lakeside Park, and the newer schools in the north end are all well-rated. The family market in Ajax is dominated by the 35-50 age bracket with kids in elementary or early high school, which is the exact buyer demographic that pays a premium for a well-prepared listing.
If you are thinking about Ajax for the commute, the math is simple: your door-to-Union time is typically 40-50 minutes including walk-to-station. No other Durham city beats that without paying Whitby or Pickering prices. If you are thinking about Ajax for the lifestyle, spend a weekend walking Rotary Park and the waterfront trail and come talk to us.

Ajax owes its existence to the Second World War. In 1941 the federal government built Defence Industries Limited, one of the British Commonwealth's largest shell-filling plants, on farmland east of Pickering. The town that grew up around it housed roughly 9,000 wartime workers and was named after HMS Ajax, the Royal Navy cruiser that fought the German battleship Admiral Graf Spee at the 1939 Battle of the River Plate. Streets were named for the ship's officers and crew. Ajax incorporated in 1950 and grew rapidly into one of Durham Region's largest and most diverse communities.

Ajax punches well above its weight on flavour. The town's diversity (South Asian, Caribbean, Filipino, West African, Macedonian) shows up on the plate: standout South Indian dosas and biryani along Kingston Road, Jamaican patty shops and roti houses near Harwood, Filipino bakeries, Sri Lankan kottu, and Macedonian-Canadian classics. Pickering Village offers a heritage main-street feel with cafes, gastropubs, and patios in restored 19th-century storefronts, while the Salem Road corridor carries the bigger-name restaurants. A waterfront brewery scene, weekly farmers' markets, and proximity to Durham farm country round out a food culture that feels less like a suburb and more like a small global city.
Ajax GO Station on the Lakeshore East line offers frequent service to Toronto Union Station, typically around 40–45 minutes, one of the most reliable commutes in the entire GO network. Highway 401 runs east-west through town with multiple interchanges, and Highway 407 ETR provides a faster northern alternative. Local bus service is provided by Durham Region Transit, with Pulse BRT routes connecting to Pickering, Whitby, and Oshawa.
Ajax detached homes typically range from $800K to $1.2M. Waterfront-adjacent pockets near Rotary Park and Paradise Park command a premium. The newer subdivisions north of Taunton offer newer build quality at slightly lower entry prices.
Ajax GO to Union Station is approximately 40-50 minutes on the Lakeshore East line. This is one of the most reliable GO commutes in the entire network. By car, 401 and 407 access are both available; 407 is preferred for North York destinations.
The Ajax waterfront trail runs uninterrupted for several kilometres along Lake Ontario with beaches, parks, and picnic areas. Rotary Park and Paradise Park are the two most popular. It is one of the most under-celebrated stretches of lakefront in the GTA.
Yes. Ajax schools consistently rank well in the Fraser Institute assessments, particularly in the newer north-end subdivisions. The family demographic in Ajax actively drives school quality.
