How Do Whitby's Neighbourhoods Differ?

Whitby's neighbourhoods differ in where they sit, how old their homes are, which parks are close and how far they are from a GO station and a highway. Four of them, from south to north, are Downtown Whitby, Blue Grass Meadows, Williamsburg and Brooklin.

Downtown Whitby is the historic core around Brock Street, with 19th-century storefronts and century homes on tree-lined streets. Whitby GO is about a 6 minute drive (2.2 km) and Highway 401 at Brock Street about 5 minutes. Peel Park and Victoria Fields are within 3 km.

Blue Grass Meadows is a settled central Whitby neighbourhood of detached and semi-detached homes near shopping and the 401. Its nearest GO station is Oshawa GO, about a 13 minute drive (6.4 km), and Highway 401 at Stevenson Road is about 6 minutes away. Willow Park and Pringle Creek Park are within 3 km.

Williamsburg is a north Whitby community of newer detached homes. Whitby GO is about a 9 minute drive (3.6 km) and Highway 412 at Taunton Road about 9 minutes. Vanier Park and Kinsmen Park are within 3 km.

Brooklin, north of Highway 407, began as a mill village in the 1820s and has been part of Whitby since 1968. Mature homes fill the village core around Baldwin Street, and subdivisions built since the 1990s sit on its edges. The 290-hectare Heber Down Conservation Area, with its trails, lies to the west. Whitby GO is about a 16 minute drive (19 km) and Highway 407 at Baldwin Street about 7 minutes. Brooklin High School (DDSB, grades 9 to 12) and two DDSB elementary schools, Meadowcrest Public School and Winchester Public School (JK to grade 8), have Brooklin addresses.

In Whitby, public schools are run by the Durham District School Board (DDSB) and Catholic schools by the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB). Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir also serves Whitby with French-language schools.
